I totally removed Cortana from my son's computer build prior to the anniversary update and after the update, Cortana was still gone. Even the taskbar search window was removed, but not the startmenu search-box. Also there there were no adverse affects with the machine hardware or for added software programs. Unfortunately, the procedure I used was deleted from youtube when the user was terminated for unknown reasons.

Check if Cortana is still shown in the task manager.

Btw, what model CPU and how much RAM does the laptop have?
