History shows us it is every bit that simple. The more educated people and societies are the more humane they are, in gnersl; and the less educated individuals and societies are the less humane they are, in general. There are few exceptions I know of, except where dictators prevent democracy in educated countries, e.g. Russia. . Education increases ones intellectual perception of the world and an increased ability to think in complex terms.

Knowledge directed perception science calls it.

And You are inverting your logic i.e. sure educated societies can be barbarians e.g Germany and Russia, or be barbarians for that matter. But show me a modern-day sophisticated humanitarian country where the people are not educated. Look at history.

And Iraq is a terrible example, the entire Middle East is mired in the seventh century and pretty much controlled by seventh century theocracies. Where they are not controlled by theocracies, they are controlled by dictators who beat the theocracies down e.g. Iraq in the past, Egypt and until the present day Turkey.

The only Middle East country that is even reasonably modern and recently Democratic are the Kurds and the rest of the Muslims world calls the Kurds practice of Islam, Islam light. They are fast moving toward a secular society and the only one in the ME where women are treated fairly.

Contrast the entire Middle East and near East for that matter with the Nordic countries and all Western democracies and some far east democracies. All of them have one thing in common, separation of church and state and a high percentage of atheists and agnostics and little control by the church.

On the other hand, every country that has a poor educational system and is greatly influenced by some religious dogma e.g. Mexico, Central America, South America, virtually all of Africa and the Middle East are countries reminiscent of the Middle Ages.

I'll make a recommendation on a book to read it is called over the edge and it is about Magellan's circumnavigation of the earth. When you read that book, what is put right in front of your face is just how barbaric we were in the 1400s. How torture was commonplace and pervasive by everyone including the church.

We have only recently had humanity and civil rights as something we can take for granted and I mean real recently-lol. LIke a few years ago.

Seems way to simplistic to me koan. Societies have been well educated and done extremely poorly. Iraq comes to mind.
