Slow escalation would assuredly cause full scale deflection attacks on South Korea and USA as much as possible, and perhaps Japanese ships [via submarine attacks]. It seems most likely that assassination of Kim the Fatter is is the plan. His murdered half-brother's son seemed like a decent sort of chap. Maybe he'd be happy to take over a denuclearized North Korea. If USA announced simultaneously with a personal attack, that all they wanted was Kim the Fatter and the atomic bomb production system, and everyone else can go on with life, it might be that an easy and rapid transition would be made. I can't think of any other plan - the giant parade opportunity being ignored means a major attack is not likely.
