First they have to damage the reef when they're cementing the permanent mooring in. Then there has to be slack in the chain due to wave action and tides, so the chain will at times drag over the coral and damage it. If you really wanted coral reefs to be preserved unmolested, you'd leave them alone. That would mean staying home and not boarding a giant flying bus loaded with almost two rail cars of fuel and flying thousands of miles to harass little reef fish. Even your skin oils and sun tan lotion damage the coral reef ecosystem.
