Hang in there koan. Your tribe is counting on you.
Do you have any thoughts on mandated euthanasia at age 70 as a way to cut healthcare cost and lower the CO2 footprint of humanity. On the surface it appears that this step would be best for the tribe. It was common among Indian tribes that the old, in order to not burden the tribe, would go off alone and not return.
As you have said many times the security and well being of the tribe is paramount and supersedes any consideration for the individual. With this in mind it only makes sense that the elderly not be allowed to continue once they have become a drain on society and are no longer productive and do not lend themselves any longer to the good of the tribe.
Along this same vein we probably should give consideration to just how far the tribe should go in providing for the handicapped who are also unable to contribute to the welfare of the tribe. These become a burden who only siphon off resources that the tribe needs and could be put to a more productive use. Placing what is good for the tribe as the over riding issue it appears steps should be taken to rid the tribe of this burden.
I know that human sentimentality would make these decisions perhaps difficult. However, taking an unemotional look at the facts would seem to make seeking a solution to the problem reasonable.
I think I already know your stand on these issues but I would like to hear you address them.
