The secret to understanding this problem and coming up with a solution is thinking of the country as a large tribe i.e. we're all in this together. And we need to keep the tribe strong which means we need to turn the vast increasing income inequality around so that there is more income "equality".

I have for a very long time advocated that we are going to have to have a seriously well planned economic model that supports sensible redistribution while not penalizing innovation. We will need to throw out today's redistribution systems and replace them from the ground up. So they're modern, scalable, and do not penalize success -- essentially, the opposite of what we now have. There is no component of our existing redistribution systems which can be retained (with the possible exception of elements of the EITC in a different form). Food stamps, unemployment, and other giveaway programs must go.

If you get something, you must work for it.

The "tribe" will want to react as you do -- hang the wealthy, punish them for their success. In reality, it is every man for himself.

This is the greatest single problem the world has ever faced, staring us in the face, and we have idiots running around worrying about fucking global warming. It would be funny were it not so damned serious.

We need for great minds to be thinking about these problems today because it truly is our next big crisis.
