Jozef, You quote Intel:
'It's a risk to go out and spend billions of dollars on these manufacturing plants,'' concedes Intel
President Craig R. Barrett. ''But if we didn't, we couldn't possibly reap the benefits. We're going
down the road at 150 miles per hour, and we know there's a brick wall someplace, but the worst thing
we can do is stop too soon and let somebody else pass us.''

Does that change anything? I believe they made $21 B in revenue
last year and each year they make at least 20% more. To make
$30 B in 1999, they have to spend $5 B plus on capacity. That's
planning ahead even if they might make mistakes on individual
expenditures. In 25 years of growth, they have learned a few
lessons about flying.

Long on Intel and Iomega

PS: Besides, Barrett's metaphor is a bit too simplified.
Intel isn't on a one way road. Rather at least 20 or 30
parallel roads and while one or two may run into bricks
or detours, the rest will steam ahead.
