Tom (RE: HiFD vs Zip)

Does my analysis sounds "Astute"!?
I read the post a while ago and tried to avoid make any comment about it, Since you explicitly ask for it...

>> 1) Iomega has the most experience with the Fuji ATOM media. <<

Fuji (co-developer of HiFD) will have even more experiecne with "Fuji ATOM"

>> 2) Iomega has stated that they have had proto 200 MB drives for over a year. <<

I originally thought the zip+ is the 200MB Zip but disappointed to found out it is just simply a re-package and slightly enhanced Zip. Still it has not take the advantage of IEEE 1284.

#3 is about Clik and not related to HiFD.

>> 4) A high capacity 200+ MB drive that can read and write a 100 MB Zip disk would be more desirable than a floppy compatible drive. <<

Floppy outsells Zip every single days. Floppy has an installed base of almost 99.x% or virtually in every PC. Zip has less than 15M. Which compatibility is more important is easy to answer but there are just too many IOMer in this thread...

>> 5) Iomega will have an easier time selling a 200+ MB drive to their
current OEMS than Sony will. <<

Hard to say, Sony is also a major OEM supplier as we all know. In fact, it is one of the few supplier of Floppy drive.

>> 6) Iomega has already run through several generations of the Zip drive so they can bring better economies to the product than Sony can. <<

Hmmm... Serveral generations??? ZipII is not even here yet! 3 Years ago, IOM is still a junior while SyQuest dominate the market. Sony and Fuji had been a big guy for very long time. And there is still many blinds who will simply buy a product if "It's a Sony".

To be fair AND to avoid this post generates tons of replies, here is some good news for IOM...

1) Sony's marketing is not very consistent or kind of greedy. It always wants 100% control which may slow the wide acceptance of HiFD or even trash the great idea.

2) 10+ Million Zip drives install base is a sizable market share. Even if HiFD success, it will take sometimes to kick away Zips entirely.

3) The most important point: HiFD is not release yet, even if it perform well as promised. We still have to see how is it (the drive & media) priced.
