ntt/onu/ adsl? ....

Hi Mark,

This last weekend, stumbled on a fujitsu position paper on telecommunications business... has been around a while- since december 1996, but interesting none-the-less:
fujitsu.co.jp

Found section "3.1 Multimedia Access Infrastructure - Domestic/Global", particularly interesting:

"In Japan, installing an intricate fiber optic infrastructure has been NTT's approach from the beginning, and the country already has a trunkline network in place. The project initially aimed to provide a "Fiber-to-the-Home" connection to every home in Japan by 2010, but this has proven to be over-ambitious in view of the costs involved. As a result, NTT has been working on some interim alternatives that will make use of some of the existing infrastructure.

In order to reduce the cost of installing an Optical Network termination Unit (ONU) in every home, NTT is currently working on a Fiber-to-the-Curb approach, which will bring optical cable as far as a curbside ONU from which existing copper cable drops will be used to connect to the homes. In the case of office buildings and large apartment buildings, ONUs will be installed in the buildings, but the wiring in the building will initially remain copper..."

Sounds like country-wide NTT orchestrated xdsl (from the onu)... Doesn't it?

Was looking for info on onu's as orctf/fujitsu are currently working on integration of xdsl (all flavors- sdsl, hdsl2, adsl, and vdsl, as plug-in cards) into the onu... due i believe later this year... many interesting implications... particularly (maybe) for vdsl...

Am posting this to you as i seem to remember a discussion on either the amtx or wstl threads re adsl/japan and the difficulties of implementation within that infrastructure...and believe you are probably as up on it as anyone .... was kind of surprised to read in this paper what on the face of it sounds like a major xdsl strategy by NTT... Any thoughts? Maybe the key to the technical difficulties is the onu?

Thanks
s
