Yes, an image is a little more risky because you can't verify it before doing a restore, although I haven't had a bad image yet, but if it becomes corrupted usually due to a faulty drive, the whole image becomes worthless.

I use at least two drives for every computer I have. One drive is an installation archive and only has my operating system and installed software. The other drive is what I call my working drive, which is cloned from the first drive and is for daily use, but it also has documents and media.

I backup my documents and media separately with the drag and drop method to copy files and folders to external drives.

I only make images of my installation archive drive, because I don't want the images to get too big.

Btw, I only use my working drive to test software and only if I like a program will I add it to my installation archive drive.
