<<I don't understand. You say that these people don't need a high capacity drive, therefore they will naturally want to pay extra for a Sony drive. Why?>>

Rocky doesn't understand either. And he is so easy to confuse. What do you think it will do to his sub-$1,000 main processor when IOM brings the 40 MB Zip disk to market at $3.95. This, in combination with the $49 (cost to OEM) Zip drive, will be the solution of choice for even the lowest cost systems.

The drive will take both low cost 40 MB and current 100 MB media They will not need to make any changes to the current drive hardware. All current drives will support both disks with just a simple driver update. Since the time to format will be reduced by 60%, manufacturing costs will go down dramatically. Once this happens, there are many obvious reasons why the number of disks sold will increase dramatically which will allow lower unit cost on all disks. They will also realize an increase in number of disks sold because they will be releasing a software tool which will image current 1.44MB floppies on to zip disks. The front end desktop component of the SW will also provide a catalog function for the 1.44's. Good bye to all those floppies forever... The R&D cost for this project is very low and time to market should be short.

Not coincidentally, the 40MB capacity is the same as the new Clik disk. I wonder why?

The only bad news is that when this happens, Rocky may decide to buy back into IOM.
