optimism v. pessimism long term Maybe its the season, but it feels to me like we are wandering in a desert (cf jewfaq.org ). Is there a Mt Sinai ahead or a Skynet nightmare? I don't know. The latter seems more plausible to me at the moment. Humans can be both ridiculously stupid & petty and enormously clever & generous. Indeed, the same person can be any of those things in different contexts. Evolution has groomed us to be tribal and it isn't at all clear to me that we will be able to overcome that defense mechanism which was very effective when we were spread out and relatively few in number but counter productive in an ever more closely interconnected and interdependent world.
