This Startup Aims To Revolutionize Metal 3D Printing For Manufacturers

Desktop Metal, a Massachusetts-based startup, announced today the release of two new metal 3D printing systems aimed at engineering and manufacturing firms. First, in September, the company's studio system will hit the market - enabling engineers to create small parts and to make prototypes out of metal quickly. Then in 2018, the company will release its full production system, which will enable manufacturers to quickly print metal parts.

Metal 3D printing is of particular interest to industries like aerospace, where the ability to manufacture low-volume, complicated parts enables the creation of better airplanes and rockets. About half of 3D printing service providers produce metal parts now, according to consulting firm Wohlers & Associates, which is a long-time observer of the 3D printing industry.

However, the current state of metal 3D printing is slow and expensive, says Desktop Metal CEO and cofounder Ric Fulop, who told me that part of the motivation for starting his company in 2015 was "out of frustration."
