Researchers in Europe have made a pretty remarkable—and accidental—discovery that could hold the key to tackling plastic pollution.

Every year, across the globe we use and discard around one trillion polyurethane plastic bags—a major problem for the environment as these bags can take 100 to 400 years to degrade.

But now, a team from Cambridge University and Spain's Institute of Biomedicine and Biotechnology of Cantabria, has found a caterpillar that can eat and degrade plastic.

The amazing discovery was made by scientist Federica Bertocchini.
