MBA,
In reference to comparing the northeast region of South America to the US -- it is tough. I can tell you that many have cars, but they cannot seem to get tires. I can tell you that even the very poor seem to eat well, but they eat about the same thing every day. Shopping is a mix of third world (live chickens, fish in a wheelbarrel) and "any mall USA." Currency inflation is always a problem whether currency traders on the exchanges know it or not. (Example: the Suriname Guilder is currently quoted at 401 to the dollar -- black market is well over 600 to the dollar) Every other store sells gold, an obvious hedge on currency inflation and a business to boot. The people seem to have money -- I could never understand where it came from though. They say they make $150/month, yet they would drive a car and eat well and have running water in their abode. (Obviously the quality of the aformentioned was minimal, but still a lot for $150/month)
I do not know if I answered the mail here and V-land is the country I spent the least time in, but they are all very similar in that particular area. The oil is still flowing pretty well from what a friend told me, bauxite is still a major export, and the folks in my current neck of the woods are buying the hell out of the timber. V-land is getting stronger economically every day -- probably leaving others in the region in their dust about now. I think it is a safe bet that gaming would continue to draw more and more people as their standard of living continues to rise. Besides, everyone knows that the ones who gamble are the ones who can least afford it and are always hoping for a fast buck and V-land is filled with people who fit that description perfectly.
