ALL: another oldie, but goodie regarding cable modems

From December 1996:

LSI Logic Enters QAM Cable Modem Receiver Chip Market

MILPITAS, CA -- December 9, 1996 -- LSI Logic today announced that the company will enter the Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) cable modem receiver market in the first quarter of 1997 with an application specific (ASSP) chip. The new CablestreamT QAM Receiver will be optimized for the needs of the cable modem, digital set top box and digital broadcast via satellite (DBS) markets. A working demonstration will showcase LSI Logic's new QAM capability at the Western Cable Television Association Trade Show (WTCA) in Anaheim, Calif., December 11-13, booth #1011.

"The competition to offer video and data services for the home is heating up," said John Daane, vice president of LSI Logic's Communication Products Division. "The cable industry is rapidly deploying new technology to offer high-speed video and data access via cable for the home market. Cable modem manufacturers need optimized solutions that use the latest technology and proven design methodology to keep an edge over their competition. LSI Logic is leveraging its leading edge satellite transmission technologies, such as the QAM demodulator, Forward Error Correction (FEC), network interface and MPEG transport and decoder, to develop new QAM receiver solutions that enable manufacturers to rapidly penetrate the cable modem market."

Based upon LSI Logic's capability to rapidly integrate a wide range of functions on a single chip, the new Cablestream QAM Receiver is designed to achieve maximum flexibility and integration through a scalable new architecture. LSI Logic is utilizing its proprietary CoreWarer methodology to implement an analog-to-digital (A/D) converter, QAM demodulator and FEC decoder onto a single chip.

Availability

Product is scheduled to be available in the first quarter of 1997. Availability of an evaluation board for the QAM receiver is also planned for the first quarter of 1997.
