Why did it happen? What's been going on with subsoil conditions there for the last 25 years? Any idea what the subsoil consists of? Different types of soil have different coefficients of friction which respond differently to cyclic moisture variations. The surface tension of water helps bind soil together, but when the moisture leaves, so does the cohesive properties of the surface tension. Adding water on top of dry soil adds weight, increasing the possibility of mudslides when the subsoil is not bound by moisture. But, yeah, science, I know. You don't do science, right?
