But as to the economic calculation I remember prime suspect Economist severely poopoo-ed the China high-speed rail project, tabling all manner of objections.

At the time I noted that had such economic arguments been successfully tabled and stopped the rollout of any number of projects (I.e internet circa 1990s, railroads 1800s) nations would have been still-born and the world as we know it would be DOA

Am thankful that economists do not make leadership material

In the mean time high-speed rail is doing fine in China, aggregating population centers, expanding the possible, lowering cost on traditional rail freight by free-up capacity, and and and
