Well, as I understand it, the marathon was somewhat artificial, held in a rather controlled environment setting with several runners put in to pace the leader on the 2 hr. target. Using pacers automatically disqualifies it from record consideration. Also, there's some talk that the Nike shoes being used are performance enhancing due to some spring action built in. I suppose all shoes are in a sense performance enhancing, and most competitive runners wear racing flats to gain an edge, but these new shoes seem to be on a new level.

I don't really follow the news in running much these days, although I have noticed some claims in the Nike and Adidas stores for their fancy shoes, but haven't taken them seriously. So, I've kept buying $80-$100 regular running shoes and have gotten slower and slower every year, now about 3 minutes per mile slower than my late 20's. Maybe shoe technology will get them all back :)
