5/12/2017 Contest update
Comey comedy dominated late night TV this week but, whether amused or not, biotech investors were insufficiently fired up to place significant additional bets. So, although biotechs were being bought today, it wasn’t enough to put the week in the green. My upcoming birthday week, however, will hopefully be kinder to our Contest portfolios.
Meanwhile, at Friday’s close, the Contest median was up 15.42% YTD (vs. up 16.17% YTD a week ago), the Nasdaq Biotech Index (NBI) was up 10.54% YTD (vs. up 11.67% YTD a week ago) and the smaller-cap S&P Biotechnology Select Industry Index (SPSIBI) was up 18.40% YTD (vs. up 18.48% YTD a week ago). The Nasdaq Composite Index (NCI) closed up 13.71% YTD (vs. up 13.33% YTD a week ago).
We have a new leader! TOMP’s portfolio, up 54.85% YTD, was boosted into first place by a 20% initial allocation to TGTX, plus additional TGTX shares allocated from the ARIA buyout. ROBO’s portfolio, up 53.44% YTD, slipped to second place and BIOADD’s portfolio, up 47.37% YTD, fell to third place.
At Friday's close, 42 of the 48 Contest portfolios remain in the green, with 33 still beating the NBI and 18 beating the SPSIBI.
The 195 Contest portfolio stock picks have an average YTD gain of 11.97% and a median YTD gain of 4.32%, with 105 of the 195 picks up for the year.
Below is the Top Ten list. Also below are the Top 5 & Bottom 5 Stocks for the week ranked by % Gained and % Lost YTD. (Prices not converted to US$ in these Tables.)
Portfolio adjustments: None.
(All corrections, especially adjustments for splits, greatly appreciated.)
Have a safe and relaxing weekend biotechies!
Peace & good health,
Bulba
