While it's not important, Thadeus Mobley is portrayed by a 25 year old actor in the 1975 scene. There are 35 years between '75 and '10, which would put the character at around 60 in '10. They said he was 82 though. What's with that?

I doubt if "bad teeth guy" is the Ukrainian/East German fellow, but upon re-visiting the opening scene, he does bear a resemblance. According to the Internet, the scene is supposed to be some Kafka homage.

It took me awhile to warm up to the show as well, but I'm also getting into it now.
