The point wasn't the firing of Comey per se, it's the obstruction of justice angle which HE provided evidence for in his own statement.

Obstruction of justice doesn't have to have an underlying crime. Impeding investigation of possible crimes is sufficient.

Furthermore, the possible crimes don't have to be his own. Impeding investigation of OTHER's crimes. Like Michael Flynn who explicitly violated the Foreign Agents Registration Act, who accepted foreign payments and didn't report them when his security clearance was being renewed in 2016, and who may have lied to FBI agents. Who knows what else.
