Win 7 Support: End of life ... .

<< Do you think 3rd party security will be able to provide adequate protection for Win7 after Microsoft support ends? >>

How adequate would you like it to be? :-)

Probably somewhat adequate, but possibly barely adequate. Bear in mind that Windows 7 is based on NT 6.1, while Win 8.1 on NT 6.3, and Win 10 on NT 10. Some of the changes in NT as it evolved are security related and Win 8 introduced the security subsystem that Defender is based on.

Windows 7 is supposedly somewhat less secure than Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 but that said my own primary Win10 system which I feel is well protected by Norton Security with integrated Smart Firewall and Malwarebytes Premium is not as completely protected as it could be because at least at the moment by my conscious choice I'm booting with the Legacy BIOS in UEFI so Secure Boot¹ is not supported.

¹ "Secure Boot is a feature included on UEFI-based computers running Microsoft Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012 and later. It provides a measure of security previously unavailable by ensuring that only trusted software components, signed by Microsoft or the computer manufacturer (OEM), are used during the boot process. That prevents malicious code from being inserted into the pre-boot environment of a system that can't easily be protected against by antivirus and other security software running on the operating system."

My 64-bit Win 8.1 Pro DPE is almost 8 years old, a few years older and less robust than my higher end 64-bit Win 7 system. As end of support draws closer to Win 7 support end of life we can evaluate how the AV/Security Test organizations feel about 3rd party effectivity against various forms of malware.
