Steve,

Compaq's exclusive use of AMD K-6 chips on the consumer side (800-1500 range) really worries me. INTC is going to further lower the boom(sp?) with PII and Pentium MMXes and HWP,Dell and GTW may be going to kick CPQ's butt(IMHO). This would have succeeded if it were a pre-emptive strike(like presarios with mediaGX) last year when INTC was caught unawares. But now they are ready to counter anything CPQ has up their sleeves with AMD and it may be de ja vu all over again (as in the K5/486 fiasco a few years ago). In the process, they probably would have alienated INTC again and may suffer on the high-end server market vis-a-vis HWP and possibly Dell, with Merced chip on the horizon. This is where CPQ would have made the mega bucks, not by selling to the Walmart crowd.

Echkard Pfeifer may have made his first major mistake in the past couple of years. Hope I am wrong.

BTW, my CPQ holding are 3 times as that of INTC.

Regards,
Clayton
