You were an altar boy, Del? I'm sure it must be a long and winding road from that to atheism. Did you just gradually lose your Catholic religious beliefs, or was it something sudden? Some people become disillusioned when a loved one dies, or a very important prayer is not answered, for example. My husband was disillusioned because he was beaten every day at school in Ireland, which seemed normal at the time, but didn't feel very Christian once he got some distance from it and had time to think (and we spent many thousands of dollars on therapy to try to overcome some of the traumatic damage). Also, it offended him that NONE of the priests or nuns died during the Irish Potato Famine, which is not surprising because the church is very wealthy in Ireland. Still, for the most part they did help as much as they could, on a compassionate basis.
