Hillary Clinton was perceived as a killer, a super hawk and reactionary. That is why many democrats stayed at home and did not vote for her. That might not be your understanding, but that's beside the point. She lost MI, PA, and WI, not because Trump scored all that much better than previous republication nominees who lost those states, but because there was a lack of interest and motivation of many from her own party. She barely carried Minnesota and according to the article you posted, 180K fewer registered Democrats turned out to vote for her. If the Democrats don't figure out (or care) why Hillary lost, they will lose to Trump or Pence again in 2020. But this time by an even wider margin.
