That's true. In place upgrades, where you keep all your software installed requires staying with the same bit factor. Changing from 32bit to 64bit or 64bit to 32bit requires a clean install and consequently reinstalling your addon software.

There's a fair amount of inconvenience doing a clean install because of this, but over the years I've reduced the number of addon programs I've added to new computers and a fresh start isn't always a bad thing.

The other factor is your equipment and I usually move to a new computer not for new software, but to get a faster processor and there was a lot of advancement even for modest CPUs in the past decade.
