People can probably move out of Illinois to somewhere else that can still afford to fund free medical treatment. Pensioners could move to places that can provide welfare payments if not pensions. As the lemmings surge from state to state seeking the last taxpayer standing, eventually, as with a marauding army, the landscape is made barren.

It's not the politicians who are at fault, it's the public who select opm politicians to rob from the "rich" and give to the "poor". If the public chose Libertarian, Tradable Citizenship, politicians, the problems wouldn't arise. Taxes would be low, business would boom.

But the public disparages Libertarian ideology so it seems they are doomed to self-destruct in MAD without the nukes being needed..

It has been an 80 year process since the welfare state started ramping up in NZ [1930s]. It took a couple of generations for the Protestant work ethic to be over-run by bludgers who are now breeding like rabbits, with over half the population now "working" for the government or on the bludge.
