Inexpensive External Drives

<< I am curious why the prices for that very large external HD are so cheap right now. It got me wondering if there is a new and improved technology in that capacity range about to hit the street?Maybe they are very slow drives? Are these drives being dumped for some reason? >>

The new WDC My Book (and My Passport lines were released in October. The press release for that release doesn't really indicate that their were major functional inprovements or build cost reductions to either range but the press release is posted here: Message 31144152

I don't think the newly reimagined and redesigned My Books from WDC (or competive Seagate equivalents) are being 'dumped' but rather I think that there is severe competitive pressure being brought to bear by the 2 major OEMs of HDDs and/or other distributors. The original MSRP of the new 8TB My Book that Amazon is now sellinhg for $199.99 and B&H for $189 was $249. It will be interesting to see if Amazon ups the price when the 8TB My Book is back in stock on the 16th or if B&H ups the price.

Taking advantage of a CyberWeek discount in November I purchased the old 3TB My Book (before Amazon stocked the redisigned models) at a then $30 and now discount ...

The new 3TB My Book now sells for $$89.96 at Amazon, the old at $119.
