Living in a van does not in itself constitute insanity, but living in a van and killing people probably does. Again, according to FBI profile of mass murderer (defined as 4 or more victims at the same place at the same time), they are never sane, and normally suffer from a major depression episode, such as your typical fired employee going postal. Legal insanity is a different issue, and mass murderers are usually legally sane, in that they are aware they are killing people, they are aware it is wrong to kill people, and sane enough to plan it.
