The Constitution doesn't say the President has the authority to suppress criminal or counter intelligence investigations. Both Nixon and Clinton were impeached party on obstruction of justice charges and Donald Trump will be too. Wait and see. Neither the American people, the courts, nor Congress will accept that the President has above the law powers that monarchs exercised in the past.

While the Constitution says the President can't be charged under criminal law while in office, it expressly allows for impeachment by Congress for "treason, bribery or other high crimes and misdemeanors. Is obstruction of justice a high crime or misdeanor? Precedent says it is because Congress has voted to impeach Presidents over obstruction of justice. Neither Nixon or Clinton attempted to defend themselves by saying the Presidency had authority to obstruct justice and I don't think the courts would ever rule that the President has such extralegal power. That settles it.

That Trump supporters are having to make arguments like this just a few months in show what shaky ground Trump is on.
