Yep, it will be difficult. And it probably will involve a civil war within the Democratic party for there to be long term changes. But, the Democratic party has gone through that multiple times over the centuries.

As to Beaumont, my experiences there is why I have little sympathy for the "Trump voter". The companies had done their part. Their automation plan included an education and retraining program for the people affected by the changes. And it was to be done in stages to minimize dislocations. But the union rank and file members didn't want that. What they wanted was to keep their old jobs and benefits. Which is why they went on strike.

Of course, not only did their old jobs go away, the companies withdrew their offers of education and retraining. So the rank and file screwed themselves out of even that by their tantrum. And many of them blamed the companies for what happened instead of realizing that there just was no way that they could have gotten their wishes. Which is not to say that Goodyear, Union Oil et al were/are angels. They were/are very profitable companies in a low margin market. But technology had come and those jobs and workers had lost out. Which is an old, old story. Especially since the Industrial Revolution.

The white working class voters that comprise Trump's core strike me the same way. They want their old jobs and benefits back. All of the offers of support and retraining gets slapped away with disdain because they don't want to change. Life can be tough that way.
