Design Changes ...

<< Talking about design changes, Acronis True Image changed their menu system drastically a few years ago. It's still good software, but I preferred the interface before. The point is that it's not just Microsoft, but many software developers do this despite often being to the dissatisfaction of end users. >>

Let's face it. We are creatures of habit and as we age we become more resistant to change. I'm a late pre-Boomer that has been computing since the early 80s in Unix, then CTOS, on to DOS an now Windows and my tastes, usage, and primary computing devices are considerably different than that of the majority of Millenials or the teens behind them, whatever those younger rascals are called.

While I use an Android smartphone with WiFI (but no mobile wireless plan) and Android based Kindle Fire with WiFi and a bluetooth keyboard in its flip open case, >90% of my actual 'computing' is accomplished on one of 3 desktop PCs with keyboard, mouse, and large high res displays while Millenials are considerably more inclined to use a slate, tablet, phablet, or even a smartphone as a primary computing device and many don't have a traditional desktop or laptop PC or Mac.

Tiles are in. Live Tiles especially. Icons with or without text have been in for a long time (a good thing). Ribbon bars aboundeth (not so good, IMO). When LastPass introduced v4 over a year ago they allowed an option to use the legacy 3.x mostly text based UI for the Vault, but abruptly yanked that option a few months ago and they explained that in this blog post: blog.lastpass.com

When it vanished I spent an hour trying to get the old 3.X option back to no avail before realizing I wasn't going to get it back and fortunately I'm acclimating to the old UI although I'd revert in a heartbeat.

Like Acronis TI, EaseUS changed their UI dramatically on their backup mainstay a few years back and while it took me awhile to adjust they took a minimalistic approach and although I initially disliked the changes it's now easier for me to train a new user the BU basics of using it than it was before.

Here on SI we have several prolific senile delinquents that made an absolute nuisance of themselves while clogging up the SI 'New Feature' Discussion Board, denigrating Dima and SI Ron, whining and moaning about the changes made to SI including the addition of logos to subjectmarks. They were justifiably banned and now have their own SI board and soap box where they can geschrei, entertain themselves and each other to their hearts content. I guess they have tired themselves out. No posts on their outpost since early March.

Cheers, - Eric L. -
