NASA Ames Research Center Selects Mellanox InfiniBand New Scalable Supercomputer

Leveraging Mellanox In-Network Computing Technology to Achieve Highest Level of Applications Performance

June 19, 2017 02:00 AM Eastern Daylight Time

SUNNYVALE, Calif. & YOKNEAM, Israel--( BUSINESS WIRE)--Mellanox® Technologies, Ltd. (NASDAQ: MLNX), a leading supplier of high-performance, end-to-end interconnect solutions for data center servers and storage systems, announced today that NASA Ames Research Center has selected the Mellanox EDR InfiniBand solutions and the new HPE SGI 8600 liquid cooled platform to expand their “Electra” supercomputing cluster with next generation interconnect and processor technology. This system expansion will leverage Mellanox In-Network Computing technology that enables smart offloading, to achieve highest level of applications performance and efficiency. The system will utilize the HPE Enhanced Hypercube system topology which today is the backbone of the NASA Ames, “Pleiades” supercomputer. The addition to the Electra supercomputer will be installed in the second part of 2017, and is expected to continue to scale in the future.

“We have been working with NASA for many years, to provide the key interconnect solutions for NASA supercomputing platforms,” said Gilad Shainer, vice president of marketing at Mellanox technologies. “By leveraging 100G EDR InfiniBand and the multiple In-Network Computing engines, such as MPI offloads, RDMA and more, NASA will be able to maximize their data center return on investment.”

“HPE is excited to have partnered with Mellanox to deploy NASA Ames’s next generation HPC cluster based on HPE’s new SGI 8600 liquid cooled platform with the Mellanox ConnectX®-5 interconnect,” said Craig Yamasaki, director product management, High Performance Computing and AI at HPE. “HPE has coupled its Hypercube topology with the new ConnectX-5 interface to enable system expansion without the use of external switches while delivering cost savings and performance improvements.”

Mellanox’s intelligent and In-Network Computing capabilities incorporated in ConnectX-5 InfiniBand adapters and Switch-IB2 InfiniBand switches enable advance data processing and real time analytics, which result in world-leading applications performance and scalability.
