Ian: In the PC you have a DVD drive that can read the data. But then if it's video data you need a decoder to view it. The decoder can be on the motherboard, on an add in card, or (if you don't mind the quality degradation) done in software.

The DVD disk isn't limited to video only, it can hold other types of data. For instance Micosoft offers Encarta on DVD.

It's conceivable that you could equip a PC with just a DVD drive and no decoder, but then your customer might call when they find they can 't play that Adult DVD Video FredE mailed them...
