I already HAVE power 24/7/365.

And these goals are conflicting ... you can't have them all. You clearly haven't given any thought to what you even want.

1) A single giant solar farm in a desert somewhere that supplies an entire continent with electricity - ala your Desertec article OR [ This would mean no one would buy solar panels! ]

2) Commercial solar farms and wind turbine farms all over generating and storing their power to deliver to customers over the grid OR

3) No grid and households dependent on their own roof top solar panels and wind turbines, storing their power in powerwalls in their individual home. [ No grid precludes the first two concepts. ]

These are very different visions.
