<< they find a way rationalize so that their Big Truth remains true>>

Great observation. We all have some aspect of the confirmation bias. It is in our DNA. People and biology are always struggling to find balance, often using analogs of feedback loop control .

The problem is that there is a point at which one's belief in the volcano god just isn't enough to keep the lava flow away.

Life can be understood as a self-learning PID controller which stands for Proportional, Integral and Derivative.

O = a*P + b*I + c*D
  • Proportional responses are metered. If a measured variable doubles, the control output doubles.
  • Integral responses are cumulative. If there is an error, the output keeps increasing until the error goes away, and vice versa for a negative error.
  • Derivative responses are based upon change. If there is a sudden increase in the measured value, a decrease of the output is given, or vice versa.
