People and biology are always struggling to find balance, often using analogs of feedback loop control . The problem is that there is a point at which one's belief in the volcano god just isn't enough to keep the lava flow away. Life can be understood as a self-learning PID controller which stands for Proportional, Integral and Derivative. O = aP + bI + c*D Proportional responses are metered. If a measured variable doubles, the control output doubles. Integral responses are cumulative. If there is an error, the output keeps increasing until the error goes away, and vice versa for a negative error. Derivative responses are based upon change. If there is a sudden increase in the measured value, a decrease of the output is given, or vice versa.
