One thing checking the box does is that it prevents automatic downloads of files you did not initiate. If a download box pops up that you did not start, you should cancel it.

As for your default download directory, the path is normally:

C:\users\(account name)\downloads

However, if you open a file explorer in Windows 10, it will look like your downloads folder is in root C:\ but it is not and file explorer in Windows 10 is misleading here.

Microsoft has tried to dumb things down, but they are not telling you the true path.

Your account name will also be at the top of the Start Menu if you click on that.

If you have trouble with directory hierarchy, a file manager like Total Commander is more straight forward and doesn't hide things the way file explorer does.
