Do I Hear $16 Billion? $20 Billion? Analyst Predicts Rival Bids for Whole Foods

Investors took Amazon.com’s $13.7 billion offer for Whole Foods Market last Friday as the beginning of the end for established grocers including Kroger and Wal-Mart Stores, sending their shares tumbling 9.2% and 4.7%, respectively. But what if it was the beginning of their renaissance? On Friday, Karen Short of Barclays justified scenarios in which either company could make their own bids for Whole Foods; not only would a rival bid keep Whole Foods out of Amazon’s hands, but it also makes sense on profit potential alone.

At a recent $43.46, Whole Foods shares are trading 4% above Amazon’s offer price, meaning some investors are also envisioning additional bids.
