6/23/2017 Contest update
They say a watched pot never boils. So if you want to hear the kettle whistle, direct your gaze elsewhere. Analogously, if you want your favorite biotech stock to surge don’t pay it close attention. Witness Omeros, my top Contest and real world holding. While I was out of town and didn’t obsessively check its price every few minutes, sure enough OMER soared. Home today and back to my usual compulsive price checking, OMER sold off. Nonetheless, despite today’s profit-taking, OMER still managed to be the top portfolio stock gainer since my last update two weeks ago. And it just missed lifting my portfolio to the Top Ten. (For the curious, I’m No. 12, about 1.6% shy of 10th place.)
Meanwhile, it was a blockbuster two weeks for biotechs. At Friday’s close, the Contest median was up 25.61% YTD (vs. up 12.79% YTD two weeks ago), the Nasdaq Biotech Index (NBI) was up 20.97% YTD (vs. up 10.94% YTD two weeks ago) and the smaller-cap S&P Biotechnology Select Industry Index (SPSIBI) was up 36.03% YTD (vs. up 20.62% YTD two weeks ago). The Nasdaq Composite Index (NCI) closed up 16.39% YTD (vs. up 15.32% YTD two weeks ago).
ROBO’s portfolio, boosted by OMER and BLCM, vaulted to the Contest lead and is now up a whopping 72.97% YTD. HRS’s portfolio, up 64.45% YTD, held on to second place and TOMP’s portfolio, up 63.33% YTD, slipped to third place.
At Friday's close, 44 of the 48 Contest portfolios were in the green, with 31 beating the NBI and 13 beating the sizzling SPSIBI.
The 195 Contest portfolio stock picks have an average YTD gain of 20.78% and a median YTD gain of 14.68%, with 121 of the 195 picks up for the year.
Below is the Top Ten list. Also below are the Top 5 & Bottom 5 Stocks for the week ranked by % Gained and % Lost YTD. (Prices not converted to US$ in these Tables.)
Portfolio adjustments: GNVC buyout by Intrexon at .297 shares of XON for each GNVC share.
(All corrections, especially adjustments for splits, greatly appreciated.)
Enjoy a safe and relaxing weekend biotechies!
Peace & good health,
Bulba
