What Does Derek Carr Plan to Do with His $125 Million Contract? Tithe

Last year as the NFL playoffs approached, it was pretty apparent to anyone paying attention that there was perhaps only one opponent who could stop Bill Belichick and the deal he has obviously negotiated with Satan to allow the New England Patriots rule over the football world. Unlikely as it was given where they have been in recent years, that looming threat to Tom Brady’s pursuit of yet another Super Bowl ring was the Oakland Raiders.
Perennial bottom-dwellers for over a decade, the Raiders had shocked the league with a spectacular year and were playing some of their best football of the season as the playoffs approached. Then disaster struck. Oakland’s phenomenal second year quarterback, Derek Carr, went down in one of the final games of the season with a broken fibula and was out indefinitely. The Raiders had no chance without him.
As unfortunate of an ending as it was for the Carr, it certainly demonstrated to the team’s coaches and ownership just how valuable the 26-year-old quarterback is to his team. And the Raiders have responded by making Carr the highest paid player in league history by inking a five-year, $125 million contract with him. There’s no doubt such a deal brings a smile to Carr and his family, but there’s someone else that’s smiling too. His preacher.
In his press conference following the announcement of the deal, Carr was asked what he planned on doing with all that money. Here’s how it went down:
Reporter: Is there one thing that you plan to splurge on?
Carr: Chick-fil-A. I’ve been eating clean…I’ll probably get some Chick-fil-A. (laugher) No, first thing I’ll do is I’ll pay my tithe like I have since I was in college getting $700 on a scholarship check. That won’t change. I’ll do that.
For those keeping track at home, Carr’s college church received $70 from his obedience in giving to God his first fruits. Carr’s church now – well, let’s just start with the $12.5 million signing bonus he just received. That means there will be a check hitting the plates this week to the tune of $1.25 million. That’s a lot of Bibles.
And that’s the thing that seems to excite Derek Carr the most:
“The exciting thing for me money wise, honestly, is that this money is gonna help a lot of people. Um, you know I’m very thankful to have it, that it’s in our hands, because it’s gonna help people not only in this country but a lot of countries around the world. That’s what’s exciting to me.”
When most stars and athletes get this kind of windfall profit, they add a helipad to their mansion, buy another jet, or buy an oceanfront summer home. Derek Carr plans on giving his to help widows and orphans. This is what being a Christian in the public eye is all about – being faithful to God whether your check is $700 or $125 million.
