Here's story of slavery in modern America.

It is the final essay by Alex Tizon, a Pulitzer winning reporter, before he died. In it he talks of a slave his family kept and brought over from the Philippines. The woman was with them for 56 years and raised him, his siblings, and eventually his children. I found the story to be candid and very touching. And it brings a new perspective on life that few of us explore.

Alex struggled to write about Lola for about 6 years. Eventually he wrote this article for The Atlantic. Ironically, he passed away at the age of 57 on the very day that the magazine decided to make his piece their cover story. He never got to know that, but the family helped in getting it published as his last work.
