It is because what he did was so dumb. He did 2 stupid things.

1) Used a 50-year smoother and purposefully ended the data at 1998 during a strong El Nino. This didn't smooth the end-point, while the previous 25 years are smoothed upwards toward the end point. This caused the 'mean' or 'baseline' of the last 1000 years to drastically rise, so that it looked so much cooler in the past, while also creating the 'hockey stick' rise.

He is a terrible data analyst and wanted to get a good result for more funding. Mann didn't expect his plot to be used on the IPCC report, where it became famous.

2) Concatenated tree-ring proxy data of temperature anomalies to observed temperature anomalies without any normalization/calibration until after applying his smoothing "trick", and this was referred to via climategate e-mail as Mike's Nature "trick". This resulted in erasing the 'medieval warm period'...when Vikings were living and farming on Greenland, and many were growing grapes in northern Britain and Newfoundland (which the Vikings called Vinland, where Vin = wine).

At some point, karma will catch up to him. Or maybe not. Who knows? He's an asshole.
