FACTS, FIGURES, & FINDINGS
DVD Drive Sales Expected to Impact Sales of Other Optical Storage Solutions
The 1997 Optical Storage Outlook, released by Freeman Associates, asserts that CD-ROM drive shipments will begin a steady decline in 1998, to be complemented by growth in DVD-ROM drive shipments. The study further indicates that "DVD-ROM products will have fully replaced CD-ROM offerings in the market" by 2002. (805/963-3853; freemaninc.com)

The Score? DVD: 1, CD-ROM: 1
By 1999, DVD drive shipments will equal CD-ROM drive shipments, according to In-Stat forecasts. The recently released report, "DVD Finally Begins Takeover of CD Market," predicts a drop in CD-ROM drive shipments in 2000 and 2001, to be offset by a growth of 71 percent and 44 percent, respectively, in DVD-ROM drive shipments.
