I'm sure, in their wishful moments, Microsoft must have thought about charging a monthly or yearly fee for Windows O/S, and would do so if they thought they could get away with it. But there is more competition and alternatives to Windows now than ever before. Thank goodness for that! However, there are some clouds gathering up there, and it seems cloud based storage and programs are gaining popularity, and these are not free.
