Sales of OS 8 has been good but I don't think 2 million X $75 will give you anything close to the true revenue from OS8. The actual number should be much lower. For example Claris's entire revenue is only $275 million..and that's a record high.

A lot of these 2 million copies were bundled with new Macs, Global Village's Modem...etc. A lot of people got the $13 OS upgrade deal. Many vendors were selling OS8 for $60 or less and these people need to make a profit too, which means that Apple sold OS8 for far cheaper.

But the profit margin on OS8 is very good. The CDs probably cost a couple dimes to stamp...and a buck or so for printing the manual. Even when you take R&D of OS8 into account it's still very profitable. That is unless you include the money spent for Copland..or Taligent..geez let's not go there.
