Unix To Battle Windows NT

"...With its recent agreement to port its Solaris operating system to Intel's Merced, Sun reinforced its intention not to support NT. Looking at 1998, Sun plans new, faster systems and high-performance graphics extending the range of its multiprocessing capabilities on the desktop.

Over the coming year, Sun plans to enter a whole range of new markets, especially on the high-end. Its new applications will focus on digital content creation, high-end imaging, simulation and modeling, computer-aided engineering and analysis, oil and gas (geosciences), CASE (Computer Aided Software Engineering), database and database front end, simulation, financial markets, MCAD (Mechanical Computer Aided Design) and EDA (Electronic Design Automation).

This month, Sun will introduce an UltraSparc workstation priced at less than $5,000. The current $5,000 workstation uses Sparc technology..."
