ZEELAND, MI - Gentex Corp. is the subject of a scathing report by a New York "short-selling" firm that stands to profit if it is successful in driving down the price of the company's stock.

Spruce Point Capital Management issued a 104-page report in which it accused Gentex managers of overstating earnings and capital expenditures, hoarding too much cash and relying on technology that is over-rated and in danger of becoming obsolete.

Gentex officials did not respond to requests for comment the report, which was sent out shortly after 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 13.

Meanwhile, Gentex's stock price swung from its opening price of $18.42 per share at 9:30 a.m. to $17.67 per share shortly after the report was published. Gentex shares rebounded to $18.24 by 11 a.m. and closed at $18.11, down 37 cents, or 2 percent, from its previous closing price.

The Zeeland company, which makes electronically dimmable rearview mirrors and camera systems for cars, electronically dimmable windows for airliners and smoke detectors for the airline industry, has traded between $15.79 and $22.12 over the past 52 weeks.

While Spruce Point Capital rated Gentex as a "strong sell," a Yahoo.com consensus of 11 analysts who follow the company rates Gentex at "2.6"on a scale of 1-5 that rates "5" as being a 'strong sell" and "3" as a "hold."
