Some more wild thoughts...

Keep in mind that CNR of a WDM system and SNR of a laser are two different things. Also, off the cuff, I think a lower linewidth and lower laser noise go hand in hand. The effective filter bandwidth built into the laser is reduced so both linewidth and noise benefit from this.

A laser is analogous to an electrical oscillator in this respect.
