| | | The only Jews who take that seriously are the Orthodox and they comprise 12% of Jews in NYC (according to Bloomberg News). On the West coast, that number goes down quite a bit, I presume. Even people who are religious and wear Yamikas, like myself sometimes, don't take that seriously. I eat what I like. I couldn't care less if its kosher or not. Now, of course, I don't eat red meat, pork or cheese, for health reasons. But I eat oysters, clams, lobster and shrimp once in a while. I love lobster; it's very healthy for you.
Where I differ from the Bible crowd, is that I take it as merely an interpretation of the word of God and not the direct manifestation of G-d's word.
Prayer, trust and faith is what religion is all about. In Judaism, what matters most is being a good human being and treating people wonderfully, as ends, and not merely as means.
As for whether a person is religious or not, I couldn't care less. It's their actions or behavior that I focus on. |
